As promised, I have put together a class for quilting your wool-embellished quilt. If you have taken a class or two from me now and have a few tops just waiting to be finished, this is the right class for you. I will concentrate on wool-embellished quilts specifically because they have their own unique set of issues when quilting. All the techniques I will teach will also apply to any quilt with appliqué.
What you will learn:
· How to properly pin-baste your quilt to prevent any twisting or pulling.
· What type of batting to use and why. (I know the shop has wool batting, so if you don’t have any, they will sell it to you.)
· Developing a strategy to quilt your wool quilt.
· You will learn three different fill patterns.
· I will teach you where and how to go around the appliqué for the best results.
· How to accentuate your appliqué with your quilting.
This will be a hands-on class, so you will need to bring your sewing machine. You must also know how to drop your feed dogs for free-motion quilting, as I don’t know how to do it for all the machines out there. If you have a walking foot, I would like you to bring that also. There are times I use a walking foot with free-motion quilting. Please ensure you know how to adjust your tension on your machine, as I am only familiar with my own equipment. I use a ruler foot, and I know that with the popularity of ruler quilting, almost all brands have one. This is the best investment you can make to give yourself the best results around your stitching, so I strongly suggest getting one if you don’t already have one.
Please bring all your wool quilt tops that need to be quilted so we can discuss how to approach each design. We will start the day learning how to pin-baste and actually baste one of your quilts. Next, we will use flannel and wool batting to learn three different background fills that I use all the time. We will do all the practicing on flannel because it is a similar thickness to wool without costing over $100 a yard.
After lunch, I will demonstrate how to quilt around all your appliqué, and you can start quilting your top that you basted. If you don’t want to work on one of your tops, you can always bring a fabric with a motif you can pretend is appliqué, but I’m hoping you will feel comfortable starting your actual top.
Things to bring:
· Sewing machine, ruler foot or free-motion foot, and walking foot. A few bobbins in case you want to change your thread color. Make sure to give yourself a new needle.
· A large ruler. I use an 8.5’ x 24.5.
· Blue tape,
· Curved basting pins: These look like safety pins but have a bend. I will have some to sell if you need them.
· Wool batting, flannel for practice, and whatever backing fabric you want to use with your quilt top.
· Thread for quilting. I use Aurifil cotton 50wt (They sell it in the store if you need to purchase it), you can use any brand you like. I usually concentrate on matching the color to the background and any appliqué I might be going over.
· Scissors for cutting thread.
· Three quilt sandwiches with flannel and wool batting. Approximately 12 x 12.
· Your quilt top, with enough batting and backing fabric.
Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.
